here but facilities for picnicking are first-class and the sense of
history is palpable.
A tip: if going ashore, use the jetty rather than easing up onto the
sandy shallows. We learnt the hard way! A stunning late April visit
went a little pear-shaped when Rob decided to beach his boat. It was
a very long wait for the tide’s return.
A short distance from here is Cannibal Cove – the site of a simple
DoC campsite. From both these coves, boaties look across to nearby
Motuara Island which, while exposed, is a great spot to visit if
conditions are favourable.
The jetty allows visitors to jump ashore and take a track leading
to the summit where there are wonderful views of the Sound.
Like Ship Cove, the island has a rich history – it is the site where
Captain Cook proclaimed sovereignty over the South Island. It’s
now a predator-free zone and if you’re lucky you may see the
