TELL TALES

Four more tall ships have signed up for this year's Tall Ships Race, which starts in
Sunderland. Among them is the Russian ship Mir, a giant among giants at 350ft (109m)
sparred length, built in steel in 1987, and sharing her name, which means ‘peace’, with the
then Russian space station. She carries a crew complement of 200 to handle her and her
29,830sqft (2,770m^2 ) of sail. The total of participants now stands at nearly 40, for the four
days of festivities to mark the race’s start, from 11-14 July. The first ships are expected to
enter the Wear on 10 July. Among the other ships are the Indian Navy’s Tarangini, a
1995-built steel barquentine of 173ft (53m) LOS and the famous Jolie Brise.

HRH The Princess Royal paid a visit to Classic Boat's stand at the
London Boat Show in January, as part of a tour of the event with
husband Sir Timothy Laurence, chatting with the magazine's
editorial team and those of our sister titles Yachts & Yachting and
Sailing Today. As well as our stand offering special show
subscription rates, Classic Boat partnered with the Classic Motor
Boat Association to put on an exhibition of classic speedboats and
runabouts at the show's entrance. Bolstering the 'classic' feel of this
year's event was the team from IBTC Lowestoft, with owner Mike
Tupper putting on demonstrations of traditional skills including
steaming and various woodworking techniques.

The show was shorter than its traditional 10 days at just five
days, resulting in a busier atmosphere and exhibitors sounding
positive overall. More than 52,000 visitors attended the ExCel
centre in east London. Highlights were the excellent talks at the
Legends Stage and the PBO stage, where a Westerly Centaur was
on show – the best-selling yacht ever in Britain. Among those giving
talks were Classic Boat regulars Dave Selby and Tom Cunliffe. Other
memorable moments were seeing Susie Goodall and her Rustler 36
DHL Starlight 'launched' for this year's Golden Globe Race and the
presence of Conrad Humphreys and his Mutiny boat and team
mates. Famous visitors included Bernie Ecclestone
