THE DEBATE
CIM
IRC
VS
Can you really race classic boats from different eras on the same race course and expect a level
playing fi eld? Surely not, and you’d think that would be the end of it, but every few years the
same debate rears its head over whether classic regattas should be run under this or that
handicap system. The latest comes on page 58, a proposal that the Med circuit should switch from
CIM to IRC. Under CIM, the Med fl eet has blossomed and CIM’s authenticity factor has been key to
keeping the boats close to their original state. No system is perfect, however, and the current discussion is
an opportunity to bring the camps closer together, even if one rating system is unlikely to satisfy all-comers. A new
system in the Med is by no means a certainty or even a necessity, but whichever system is used there or elsewhere,
the guardianship of the boats should remain a central tenet.
