New stamps

France have issued a five-stamp miniature
sheet of Red Cross stamps which will help
to raise funds for the French Red Cross
organisation. The stamps feature simple
black and white artwork with the red cross
symbol adding colour to each design. The
sheet features text including ‘The Red
Cross was made from love and courage’.

Israel have issued a stamp to encourage
nationals to save for their pension,
following a government move to give a
tax benefit to pension savers. The stamp
depicts piles of coins with a walking stick
representing a graph. The label of the
stamp, meanwhile, shows two golden
eggs in a nest, with facial features added
to make them look like an elderly couple.

Monaco, Sri Lanka and the United
Nations itself have issued stamps to
mark the UN’s seventieth anniversary.
The UN stamps show scenes from
inside the UN Headquarters building
in New York, Monaco’s stamp shows a
map of the world against a backdrop of
the ocean, and Sri Lanka’s stamp shows
the letters ‘UN’. The United Nations was
established on 24 October, 1945.

The USA’s
‘Quilted Paper
Heart’ Forever
stamp is set to
be dedicated
on 12 January
at the Dallas
Love Airport,
USA. The 2016 Love stamp features a
heart created using the art of quilling.

A new set of stamps on Biodiversity is set
to be issued on 21 December by South
Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
The six stamps show the Greater burnet,
Aceana magellanica; Tussac beetle,
Hydromedion sparsutum; Macaroni
penguin, Eudyptes chrysolophus; Sea
spider, Pycnogonida; Crested bigscale,
Poromitra crassiceps; and the Leopard
seal, Hydrurga leptonyx.

In 2016, the Europa stamps will
celebrate their sixtieth anniversary,
writes Jürgen Haepers. Time again for a
common design issue!
‘Ecology in Europe – Think Green’ is
the theme chosen for the 2016 Europa
stamps theme. Later, PostEurop decided
to transform that theme into a common
design to celebrate sixty years since the first
Europa stamps issue in 1956.
A competition to select the common
stamp design was launched among
PostEurop members with Cyprus Post artist Ms Doxia Sergidou chosen. ‘The main purpose
was to show that it is in our hand to create a greener planet,’ Ms Sergidou explained. ‘Thus, I
have placed a hand on the top side of the stamp which basically represents anyone of us, actively
replacing the grey colour (the environmental pollution) with the green colour which symbolizes
environmental living and hope, and in turn inspire us for a better world. The left side of the
stamp represents the polluted side and is painted grey. It also shows how the human activities
are negatively influencing the environment. In contrast on the right side of the stamp, is the
green side which show us how using renewable energy resources, acting in a more environmental
way and becoming more environmentally aware could positively affect the environment.’
Until the mid-seventies, Europa stamps were always issued as common design stamps. Since
1974, they follow a common theme and each country interprets it freely. 2016 will be the
third time the Europa stamps will see a common design since 1974. In 1984, a design of a
bridge was issued to celebrate the 25 years of the CEPT (European Conference of Postal and
Telecommunications Administrations, the authority responsible of the Europa stamps issue
until 1992) and in 2000 a design representing a tower of stars build by children was issued by
each country for the new millennium.
Some collectors love such common designs as they present a strong symbol of European
unity, while others would prefer to see designs influenced by each different country and its
culture. Thankfully, many countries have announced that they will issue two stamps next year,
one with the common design and another from their own creation, so 2016 will be a busy
year for Europa collectors, before we return to a common theme in 2017 with ‘Castles’.
