& COIN MART

STAMP

Where did the year go? It seems like only yesterday we were looking forward to the London
2015 stamp exhibition and the many stamps to be issued in the year and here we are
contemplating the stamps to come in 2016. Time flies, and we’ve certainly had fun over the past
twelve months, covering all manner of subjects and continuing to celebrate our hobbies.
The next twelve months have plenty in store for us, including another hectic schedule from
Royal Mail and the Royal Mint, who have recently revealed their 2016 stamp and coin schedules,
respectively. The 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare is just one of the
many anniversaries to come, and it’s no surprise that both stamps and coins will be issued in 2016 to celebrate
the life of the famous writer.
As any GB collector will tell you, the Bard has received his fair share of philatelic honours over the years,
beginning with the 1964 Shakespeare Festival stamps – the first stamps to depict a ‘commoner’. Stamps for
Scottish poet Robert Burns were not quite as forthcoming, as our piece on page 31 reveals, but at least the
campaign for a Burns stamp produced a few other Burns-related covers and labels, as shown on page 32.
