Sixty years

of Stampex

Stampex is celebrating its sixtieth
anniversary this year and we’d like to
feature some memories and photos from
past shows in the next Stampex show guide
in September, which will once again be
published by the team behind Stamp & Coin
Mart. If you have some Stampex stories or
pictures to share, please e-mail:

which was first awarded at Stampex in 1956 was
revived last year after a ten-year gap. The medal
is sponsored by Universal Philatelic Auctions.

Art stamped
While one collector joked that the biannual
stamp event sees the average age of people
in the trendy London borough double or
even treble, this year’s Spring Stampex wasn’t
just for the more experienced collector. The
Kidstamps stand gave youngsters enjoying
the half term holidays the chance to take part
in activities and the popular auction, while
philately and craft combined at the Artstamped
stand, a new and welcome addition to the
show which showcased the stamp-inspired
artwork of the enthusiastic Suzanne Rae, who
is aiming to ‘inspire the next generation of
philatelists whilst having a bit of fun along
the way’. Thanks to the colourful artwork the

Artstamped stand was awarded a trophy for the
‘Best Dressed Stand’.

Philatelic bureaux
The springtime event also sees a range of post
offices at the show, including Guernsey, Jersey
and the Isle of Man, as featured in our regular
‘Around the Islands’ guide (see page 44). The
latter launched their new Queen’s ninetieth
birthday stamps at the show, including a
special first day cover celebrating the sixtieth
anniversary of Stampex, and photographer
Arthur Edwards MBE was on hand to sign
related products. Having snapped photos
of the royals since the 1980s for The Sun
newspaper, Arthur has seen his images
reproduced for mass consumption and has
rubbed shoulders with the royal family many
times, but he was clearly very proud to see his
photos and credit on a set of stamps.

to mark the Queen’s ninetieth birthday. Arthur signed related products at the Isle of Man stand • The queue to purchase
the limited edition Royal Mail 500 miniature sheet, featuring Stampex branding, stretched across the exhibition hall and
saw thousands of collectors purchase the special product
