Coins on

a budget

This month’s bargain coin is a little

different, since it’s a ‘jeton’, purchased

for £4 at an antique and collectors

market, writes Ed Archer. Jetons are

often mistaken for medieval coins,

however they are essential to the

understanding of the economics of the

Middle Ages.

Jetons take their name from the

French word ‘jeter’, meaning ‘to

throw’, and are sometimes referred

to as casting counters. They were

placed on a board which had columns

of units and tens, hundreds and

thousands. Thus to enter 101, one

counter goes in the units column and

the next one is placed in the hundreds

column. In this way the accountants

of the time could do their sums with

ease. The use of jetons became more

popular than the abacus.

The jeton illustrated has an image

of a ship on the reverse with an

inscription that refers to George

Schultes, 1552. On the obverse there

is a lozenge containing the French

Fleur de Lys, again a reference to

George Schultes, and the date 1553.

The Schultes family made a wide

variety of jetons with different designs

at their workshops in Nuremberg,

South Germany. However, they were

not the only manufacturers of Jetons,

the Krauwinkel family also made large

numbers of them.
