Stamp update

Spink recently offered a collection of Indian De La Rue issues produced
between 1855 and 1902, described as ‘a truly delightful period of Indian
philatelic history’. The sale featured original 1854 essays for the new De
La Rue issues, including a series of nine progressive die proofs of an essay
bearing the Colonial head facing to the right. ‘Each die is sunk on varying
sized card, the designs are beautiful examples of the development of a stamp
and detail the drastic and most minute of changes to this iconic issue,’ the
auction catalogue explained. ‘Many show backgrounds in circles and squares,
others detail script surrounding the central head.’

of three essays of the 1945 ‘French zone’ stamps issued during the

stated: ‘We could offer no other copy in our 65-year-old auction history
from here. This underlines impressively the importance and rarity of this
spectacular issue.’
