On 13 January, the Kirkcudbright Philatelic
Society held a special Celebration Dinner to
mark their fiftieth anniversary. The Society
was founded in 1966 and although one of
the smaller clubs in Scotland has always had
a strong membership. Many of the founder
members were still present, reminiscing on
how they were among the first to enjoy the
discovery of the now famous Kirkcudbright
Cover. The dinner, held in the grand home
of the current President, was attended by
representatives from the Association of Scottish
Philatelic Societies and the Royal Philatelic
Society London, with David Beech, FRPSL
being the Guest Speaker.Fifteen members of The Royal Philatelic

Midlands, presented displays to members
recently. The inspiration behind the afternoon,
and the person who undertook most of the
planning, was John Pearce, who sadly died in
September last year, being denied the chance
to see the outcome of all his hard work. Birthe
King, giving the vote of thanks, thanked all
those who had displayed for the entertainment
they have provided. Born in Denmark,
she added that she had, not unnaturally,
particularly enjoyed the display of the Rail
Stamps of Funen and Langeland in Denmark,

began the year with the Annual Competition
that attracted interesting and varied entries.
The National & General was won by Harry
Jackson for ‘Stamps and covers from the
Indian state of Jaipur’; the Social by Charles
Lloyd with ‘Postcards from Belgian Congo;
and the Thematic by Doug Howkins for
‘Provincial Shields of Spanish Provinces’. The
next meeting was again a members’ display
with the theme of M. Subjects included
misdirected mail; military; miniature sheets
of mail boats and mammals; and a montage
of miniature sheets from Madeira. Not to be
outdone by their husbands two wives baked
cakes for the occasion, a ‘marmalade cat’ cakeSociety news
Founded almost seventy years ago to promote all
aspects of British North America (BNA) philately,
the Canadian Philatelic Society of Great Britain
welcomes BNA collectors of all levels.
The Society was originally known as the
Scottish Canadian Study Circle and on its
re-formation in 1946, adopted its present name.
This was the same year that the Society’s journal
Maple Leaves was launched, and every issue of the journal can be found on the

Membership is worldwide, with a strong representation in both Canada and the
USA. Members receive Maple Leaves quarterly, and can take part in the group’s
exchange packet, borrow items from the specialist library, take part in auctions,
and attend local group meetings and the annual
Society convention.

Hotho, both were enjoyed by members
during the evening!The newly formed Cockermouth Stamp Club
has a full schedule of meetings for 2016, to be
held on the fourth Thursday of each month at
11.30am at Cockermouth Conservative Club
on Main Street. Members who have joined so
far range from novices to specialists and there is
a wide range of collecting interests represented
amongst them. The 24 March meeting will be
on ‘Recent acquisitions and works in progress’
while a bourse will take place on 28 April. For

London saw Philip Lindley FRPSL give a
display on ‘Royalty and the mails at Windsor’.
Janet Bygate said: ‘Philip’s talk on social and
philatelic aspects of his subject was fascinating
and informative with the material on display
creating much interest and discussion.’The Society’s annual competition entries

Hobbs with ‘Propaganda Envelopes’,
Maurice Buxton with ‘Insured Letter
Irregularities’, Glenn Morgan with ‘An
Olympic Effort’ and Martin Lloyd with

hosted Geoffrey Miller recently, who gave
a display of stamps overprinted during the
First World War to pay war tax. In all, 27
countries issued special stamps, seventeen
of these were in the Caribbean, where the
funds raised were used to support a West
Indian Contingent of troops, to buy war
equipment and to meet various local needs.
