I

N my last auction (12th January) Collectors like You helped U P A create a NEW United King-
dom Philatelic Auction Record of 2,128 di erent bidders in a single stamp auction. To put
what you achieved into perspective most stamp auctions (if they will tell you) are supported
by between 300 to 500 di erent bidders, no stamp auction in the UK to my knowledge (and I
stand to be corrected) has more than 1,000 di erent bidders in a single auction... so you can
see the scale of what you achieved... is absolutely awesome... up to 1,800 more bidders than
some other auctions in a single U P A auction

...Now, I can just hear you saying “so what Andrew, what’s the big deal?”

The Collectors’ Secret Weapon?

I earnestly believe

Collectors want stamps,

Not charges...Join Me...

It may be more important than meets the eye.
The point is that collectors like you are helping me to
prove that the principle of no extra charges I have
established over the past 60 auctions in 15 years may
be the fairest and best deal for Y O U; and crucially this
principle has been proven sustainable for collectors
and auctioneer... so that at U P A there really is
another way for collectors to win the stamps they
want, at prices they are prepared to pay in auction,
or even lower.
Some other auctions may contend that stamps in
their auction are estimated cheaper than stamps in
mine. Of course with U P A auctions of up to 28,350
lots that is almost certainly bound to be true in certain
situations, but naturally one has to compare ‘like for
like’ and stamps are notoriously subjective. We don’t
profess to be perfect, and when we get it wrong our
policy is to rectify with good grace and generosity -
but our describers are instructed to describe faults.
Naturally if those auctions charge ‘buyer’s premiums’
then some stamps on a ‘like’ for like’ basis, one could
argue, should be estimated lower...
...So often collectors, for example, e-mail us
pictures of stamps that they have won on the
internet... and ask me why the stamp they have
won is half the price than another o ered in a major
auction or at retail? Almost invariably the reason why
boils down to condition, or being a scally cancelled
example, repaired or similar and sadly on occasion
even being an out and out fake. All that glistens in
internet auction bargains is seldom gold...
...However, if there is ONE thing over any other
that I have learned from internet auctions
such as eBay...
...However, if there is ONE thing over any other that
I have learned from internet auctions such as eBay –
that is the principle of NO extra charges has become
rmly xed in our psyche... and certainly it is in mine.
Collectors do not want to spend their hard-earned
money on extras such as buyer’s premiums (BP),
credit card charges, postage and even insurance.
Collectors want to spend their money on stamps.
Transparency is king, which is why I sometimes nd
it annoying having to nd the ‘buyer’s premium’ –
buried, hidden in the ‘small print’
By now, I would hope that more than half the
philatelic world would know about the Unique U P A
Reducing Estimate System. Imagine this scenario.
You attend a stamp fair. You spot the same stamp you
saw o ered by the same dealer a year ago – o ered at

the same price, in the same (slightly tattier) stockcard.
When you rst saw that stamp you were interested.
You even vouchsafed a slightly lower price which
was rmly rebu ed with “that’s the price”. That stamp
could still be sitting there for sale at the same price
two years later...
Now, imagine nding that stamp o ered in
a U  P  A auction. If still unsold it would be 11%
cheaper in the next auction, a further 12% cheaper
in the following auction, a further 13% cheaper in
the 4th auction which would be 12 months after
you saw that stamp o ered... so an originally
£100 estimated stamp would now be estimated at
just £68 and crucially a bid could win this (£100)
stamp at reserve of just £54 as U P A reserve lots
at 20% lower than estimate... (just once further
unsold the estimate would be £59 and the reserve
only £47) ...it’s not hard to see why stamps sell at
your price at U P A
Combine this reason with paying NO extra
whatsoever and you can see the reason why so many
collectors and some of the largest dealers in the world
bid and win stamps at U P A auctions.
Now, dial in MassivePhilatelicChoice –
with 28,350 lots in my last £2,083,177 auction ...up to
20 x more lots in ONE U P A auction than many other
auctions and you can see the reason why 90%+/- of
collectors and some dealers are successful – YES,
Y O U have every chance of success, arguably more
chance of success than bidding by post in a public
stamp auction and not risking paying over the top
backed by a total No Quibble Refund Guarantee so
it is hard to lose or make a mistake bidding in my
U P A auctions.
For a while now I have been puzzling over how to
reward your loyalty? Logically, rather than o er some
gimmick free postage enticement, can we a ord
to lose £4+ per client per auction in postal/delivery
charges you have paid us to deliver your stamps?
Bearing in mind my belief that collectors should
ONLY pay for stamps they want and NOTHING else

  • it may not sound much but when you multiply £4
by approaching 2,000 deliveries per auction – we are
talking about £8,000+/- for each U P A auction... can
we a ord to lose this?
Hmm. Well perhaps we can if we invest free
shipping as a bonus thank you for your loyalty.
There must be at least 1,000 collectors and some
dealers who bid in each and every U P A auction.
So I’ve come to the conclusion that if we o er to

reward your loyalty FOR bidding in each one of
my auctions – then to encourage others to bid in
every U P A auction we can a ord to sacri ce postal
charges averaging £4 per client and up to a £10 limit
per auction per client for those winning higher value
lots, PLUS include FREE Insurance in transit. So, until
further notice, under beta test, as a reward for your
loyalty – commencing from the next auction you bid
in you will pay NO postage/delivery charge – and
provided you can bid in the next 5 out of 6 U  P  A
auctions (so you can miss bidding in ONE auction
out of SIX) you will only pay for your stamps and
Zip, Nada, Zilch, Rien, Niets, Nihil, Nowt,
Nothing more...
Just the cost of your stamps and
NOTHING more
