TELL TALES
Nearly 1,000 black-and-white Beken plateglass negatives of lifeboats will be
preserved and digitised for the RNLI, thanks to £30,100 from the Heritage Lottery
Fund and a private donation from Isle of Wight resident Christopher Andreae. The
photos, spanning the era between the 1880s and the 1980s, depict RNLI lifeboats
built by Isle of Wight-based JS Whites. The RNLI bought the collection from Beken
recently at a Christies auction. Pictured here is RNLB Lucy Lavers (CB346).
The first edition of Cowes Spring Classics
will take place from 11-13 May 2018, with
two days of racing from Shepards Wharf
Marina. It will be open to boats built in
wood and designed before 1970, with
racing organised in classes using either IRC
or OGA handicaps as appropriate.
Co-organiser Martin Nott said: “By
holding the event in May we are hoping to
extend the racing season for these
fabulous boats. We are inviting a very
wide range of classic yachts, large and
small, and although we expect people will
take the racing seriously, it will be a
relaxed regatta conducted in a
gentlemanly manner, in keeping with the
age of the yachts. We aim to make the
social side and the appreciation of the
history of the competing yachts as
important as the racing.”

The 8-Metre Worlds will take place from June 25 to July 7, based at
the Langenargen Yacht Club on Lake Constance, Germany. There
are no less than twenty 8-Metres based on Lake Constance, of
which 14 are in full racing trim, so after the enormous success of
the 2017 Worlds in Norway, where 28 yachts took part, hopes are
high for a record fleet. In Norway the fleet included yachts from 11
countries, among them Sira, raced by Norway's King Harald. She
will compete again this year. Defending champions will be Elfe II
from Germany defending the First Rule Trophy, Carron II from
Switzerland in the Neptune Trophy, the Austrian Pandora in the
Sira Class and the overall champion Miss U from England (based
on the Hamble River).
