BESSIE
Modelled and built by Per
Persson, 1909
LOD 25ft (7.6m), rig spritsail
sloop
The near-total, 1,859-hour
rebuild of this Swedish,
clinker-built fi shing boat was
one of the most unusual
restorations we covered in the
magazine last year. Little of
the original remains, but
respect for the original
methods and design was
taken to great lengths by the
Nyhåmns Sag & Båtbyggeri
yard that restored her.

GLENDHU
Designed by Alfred Mylne, built by Glen Boatyard, 1950
LOD 28ft (8.5m), rig berm sloop
She was stretched 2ft 6in (75cm) out of class (the Glen Class) by one
owner and sheathed in a cold-moulded outer skin by Tim Loftus for
her current owner. The result is a scrapyard boat still sailing today.

PICCOLO
Designed and built
by Wm Fife III, 1932,
LOD 36ft (10.9m),
rig berm sloop
The very thorough
rebuild of this 6-M by
CB Restoration of the
Year winner Tom
Owens (for another
6-M, Valdai) was for
David Cockburn, who
knew her in the
1960s when she had
a cruising cabin and
his grandfather
owned her. Now she’s
ready to race, much
as original again.

ROSEMARY III
Design and build by Wm Fife III, 1924, LOD 38ft 6in (11.7m), berm sloop
Trish Kohn, great-grandniece of William Fife, bought Rosemary III at the
back end of 2008 with husband Rob and what started as a loose
fairlead ended up as a complete restoration under Ashley Butler. Today,
she’s a relatively rare example of a well-preserved, practical cruising yacht
from the most aesthetic designer of them all.

VIKING
Designed and built by Chumley and Hawke, 1947, LOD 29ft 2in (8.9m),
rig gunter sloop
Elongating a transom-sterned 26ft 5in (8.1m) ex-Broads hire yacht to
the canoe-sterned iteration seen here, not to mention replacing half the
timbers, 500ft of planking, tabernacle, deck, cabin and all spars, was the
most ambitious job yet for Broadland Boatbuilders.

LONA III
Designed by J Pain Clark, built by King & Sons of Burnham, 1907,
LOD 35ft 6in (10.8m), rig gaff cutter
Belgian owner Bart Carpentier spent seven years restoring this, the
designer’s own yacht, in tandem with Tradewind Yachts in the
Netherlands, who rebuilt the cabin trunk and doghouse as original.
Last year, Bart and son sailed her back to her build port.
