NIGEL SHARP
TERROR
Designed by Paul Gartside, built by Jonathan Lloyd-Davies, LOD 20ft (6.5m), rig gaff sloop
As a student build, a strip-planked 20ft topsail gaff sloop of this level of detail and with not a straight edge in sight might seem
a tall order. But Jon, a student at the Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis, with some woodworking experience behind him,
was determined to make a splash with this 2014 design from Paul Gartside (not a designer renowned for easy-to-build, boxy
boats). All went to plan and this is the very elegant result, with its hints of Victorian steam launch design.

GUAPA
Designed EW ‘Skip’ Etchells/Bill Traff ord, built
Alchemy Marine, LOD 34ft (10.4m), berm sloop
This is the latest and most audacious build from
previous CB Award winner Bill Traff ord, who
takes end-of-life GRP hulls and turns them into
SoT masterpieces. To turn an Etchell into this
involved lifting the topsides to accentuate sheer,
as well as lengthening her by 4ft (1.2m). She
sails as well as her pedigree would suggest.
Below, she features a heads, galley, two settee
berths and a double in the forepeak.

FORTUNA
Designed NG Herreshoff /Sandford Bros, built
First Light Boatworks, 26ft (7.9m), berm sloop
The story of the Alerion Class Sloop, as it is
known these days, started in 1912 when Nat
Herreshoff drew Alerion III for his own
enjoyment. The design was largely forgotten
until, in 1977, Alfi e and Edward Sanford took
the design and rendered it suitable for the 21st
century, with cold-moulded build, simplifi ed
rig, more effi cient centreboard and rudder,
and better accommodation. This one was built
by First Light Boatworks and launched in May.
She’s the 29th ACS built in 40 years and has
joined the class’s epicentre in Nantucket.
