Also from the French Rosewest Shipyard (see above), the

Cape Cod is a glass-built weekender just under 30ft (9m)

in length, with a cockpit that is RCD-C rated to seat an

amazing eight passengers. The generous bermudan rig, set

up with every convenience for singlehanding, should be

enough to get you going very nicely, with a sunbed, table,

swim-ladder and freshwater shower for enjoying

anchorages, something the boat can do by raising the

centreboard to give draught of just 45cm (18in). It’s a light

boat, too, for the size, at just 1,450kg (3,190lb) which

should put trailing it in reach of more people than the 2.5

tonnes or so you might expect.

The icing on the cake is two full-length berths in the

bow section, covered by a flush deck and hatch. Clearly,

the recipe has been a success: the yard has built 17 Cape

Cods since 2012.

Serious teak

The annual Classic Boat trip to the Marine Equipment Trade Show in Amsterdam in November was
enhanced by making the acquaintance of Gabriel Berges of the Rosewest Shipyard, established in Lorient,
Brittany, in 2004. These days, the yard is based in Bordeaux and focusses its efforts on a stylish modern
picnic boat, the Long Bay, and a sailing boat, the Cape Cod (see below). The three boats in this photo stem
from the yard’s early days building traditional boats in Burma teak. Rosewest has a number of old stock boats
to sell, like these: a Nano 8 (8ft) rower (in the foreground) is normally €4,770 (£4,147) and the Nano 10s are
priced at €6,998 (£6,085). However, a current 45 per cent reduction for single purchases (up to 70 per cent
for multi-buys) means the 8 is just €2,625 (£2,282) and the 10 €3,850 (£3,347). The offer ends on 21 January.
