ARTISAN BOATWORKS

20ft Friendship sloop
Here’s a very unusual offer. Alec Brainerd of Artisan
Boatworks in Maine is a top builder and restorer, and
we’ve featured a few of his ‘fixer-upper’ options in the
magazine over the years. What makes this sweet little
20ft (6.1m) Friendship sloop an unusual proposition is
the low price of entry into the world of saving a classic
yacht and having it professionally restored to as-new
condition. She was built in 1962 by Nathaniel D Clapp
from an original Charles Morse half model.
Alec says: “She’s currently in the water and sailing,
but her iron-fastened backbone needs some work. The
engine has been removed but could easily be replaced,
there are a few bunks down below, a small Wilcox head,
and space for installing a little wood or coal stove. This
boat will be arriving here at the yard later this week and
is available to buy. She’s reportedly in good condition
otherwise, and we would love to fix her up this winter for
a new owner. We can’t imagine a more perfect little
daysailer/weekender!”

Asking $6,600 as seen or c$30,000 for restored
boat, lying Maine, tel: +1 207 542 0372 or visit

LADY CORINNE

Bluewater Hillyard ketch

Pre-war Hillyards are usually well built of pitch pine on oak, seaworthy and far more attractive than people realise. This 37ft
(11.3m) ketch built in 1939 fits the bill, differing only in terms of her ketch rig, although placement of the mizzen mast just aft
of the cockpit is more akin to the less obtrusive yawl rig. Lady Corinne is, according to her broker in “impressive condition”
having had a big refit in 2009, including a new deck, and much work since. Hillyards are commodious and this one boasts a
lovely three-berth saloon with wood burner and a vee-berth in the forepeak. She has a good gear level, a rebuilt Perkins
diesel (in 2007) and has taken her current owners to the Caribbean and back. A perfect ‘family around the world’ yacht?
