Ruins of Meridian Hotel

, Gautam Bhatia 1995, 8" x 12", Ink on Paper

Everywhere you look, the city streets are stalked
by sinister messages of ambition and power, the
Forbes 500 list of murders, rapists, industrialists,
politicians all gather in the winter gloom to
discuss their next move, pitiless and demanding
in their purpose. After years of practised idleness
and inaction – in maidans, at India Gate, in
Parliament, on the press pages – emotions run
high. The nation’s daily debates take place from
immoderate positions. Everyone has to have a
say, everyone must disagree. Delhi’s multitude
of words and perplexing syntax are a persistent

justification for its actions and inactions – a
nocturnal balm that radiates out of the television
screen every evening. In this, the kitchen
sink of public discourse, everything gurgles
and splashes – Indian bureaucrats, Pakistani
generals, new authors, environmentalists and
God men – before becoming sewage. I beg to
hereunder remind the aforesaid that with reference
to Addendum/Sub. A/3C of 12-11-13... The
medium is the tedium; no message, no moral,
no truth but merely the rage to assassinate the
messenger.
