black gets illuminated as a lamp glowing in
the darkness,’ she says. The images in her
work guide Seema Kohli to the medium.
‘A certain image may demand to be a
sculpture,’ she says, ‘a certain concept only
as an installation and a certain emotion
as an experiential performance.’ She says
her style has not changed but evolved. ‘I
personally believe as an artist that I keep
flowing like a river, keep expanding as a
fragrance and keep evolving by breaking my
own boundaries.’
For Arpana, the evolution of her art is
a different story altogether. ‘Earlier, my
figures filled the canvas and were too

direct,’ she says. ‘Now I like more mystery.
I also like the eye to wander. I have done a
few installations too like “Painting is Not
Dead” in my Chennai solo in Gallery Veda,
I used a long canvas laid on a table, hospital
drips, blobs of colour from the syringe tip
and a blackboard on which visitors drew
with colour pastels to experience the joy of
drawing. But, primarily, I’m a painter and
the flat surface of the canvas calls me to
weave a world on it and I swim in colour.’
