‘I

discovered Parvathi’s work at the
Kochi Biennale 2014 and went back
to see it a couple of times,’ discloses
French abstract artist Pierre Legrand. Why?
Just because he liked the perfect synthesis
between complexity and clarity in her work.
‘Everything is clean, precise, legible. As I
work mainly in colours, I greatly appreciated
the choice of black and white. The subjects
she chooses are also part of my creative

exploration, except that I choose to work
at a much smaller scale, at the cellular or
atomic level,’ he says. Which brings us to
the perennial question, he reminds, ‘What
is abstract? What is realistic? Is the picture
of atoms abstract?’ Technology has aided
the process of abstraction by augmenting its
peregrination of taking away or removing
characteristics from something in order to
reduce it to a set of essential characteristics
