vocabulary unique to him has always
inspired me and made me introspect on
my own work.’ As far as the much older
Atul is concerned, even if he has not
followed Iranna’s work ‘systematically’,
he admires the ‘playfulness’ in his
works, plenty of which can be found
in Iranna’s current solo. What Iranna
doesn’t realise though is that over the
years Dodiya has been making a silent
transition. ‘From realism,’ Dodiya says,
his art ‘is gradually moving towards
abstraction.’ Change is also the constant
in Iranna’s work. ‘Over the past two
decades,’ he tells us, ‘the imagery in my

work has changed from the physical,
socioeconomic, political and religious
aspects of humans to the spiritual quest
of Buddhist monks and further towards
the organic aspects of nature, especially
trees and inorganic objects such as
carpets, boats, and the like. The visual
vocabulary of my work has evolved in
response to the interactions between
the contemporaneity of time, the social
environment and my daily experiences
within it.’
