What is a good buy?
Kiran Nadar: A good buy is what I like whether
it is expensive art or video art. It is just different.
It is difficult to define what is important.
Jai Danani: A good buy to me has nothing to
do with the monetary amount it was purchased
for but actually more to do with the rarity of
finding and acquiring the piece. I think for an
‘A grade’ work of art you should be paying more
than market value, but getting the work is the
hardest part and that to me is a ‘good buy’.
What advice do you have for young collectors?
Kiran Nadar: They must have passion and
develop an eye and discern their own perception
and look at art individually. Young collectors
should develop talent looking at art by visiting
more galleries and art shows. A practice
should be established so that their eyes should
get accustomed to the art and then develop
the ability to collect art and observe veteran
collectors’ journeys. Young collectors should
take baby steps and grow gradually in their
journey to develop their collection.
Jai Danani: My advice would be to learn, to
look and to understand before making any
purchases. Your eye will be your most important
tool in collecting, without that your collection
will just mimic someone else’s. Take your time
and have the courage of your conviction when
collecting.
