Notes: the proposed stamps were denominated
in Sterling and in potatoes, the de facto
currency on Tristan in the 1940s. Allan Crawford
later arranged for the printing of the Potato
stamps in South Africa and the resulting
sheetlets (1d x 4) are in many collections

£1.20 – The iron barque West Riding
Notes: the lifeboat was spotted by the West
Riding, but was then lost from view. To this day
a mystery, the disaster is the worst, in human
terms, in island history

was minister and schoolteacher on Tristan,
