I started watercolor painting at the age of 67, and it’s been a wonderful
experience taking workshops and meeting other artists. Lemons came
about when I attended a workshop, the subject of which was “Setting
Up and Lighting the Still Life.” Texture was important; I created it by
using many layers in dif erent colors and allowing the fruit to show its
imperfections. h ere are three distinct textures in Lemons: the smooth-
ness of the colander, the softness of the fabric and the roughness of
the fruit. Lighting was very important, as well, as it cast shadows from
one side that were somewhat dramatic, which accentuated the texture.
I think it’s good to remember that shadows have more colors in them
than grays and are often made of the object’s colors. By including
those, you give the object more depth.
My advice: Study the work of other artists—the ones you like
and even those you don’t. It’s only by painting in many styles that
you’ll begin to see a pattern in your work. M.G.
