THE ‘BLEND IF’ TRICK

Blend If lets you combine
layers based on their
brightness, giving you
complete control over
which tones are visible...

01

BEGIN BLENDING
Copy and paste an
image of a sky with some
light, wispy clouds over your
main image; this adds the
clouds picture as a new layer.
Double-click the cloud layer
in the Layers Panel to bring
up its Blending Options. Try
dragging the Blend If sliders
to see how they afect the
image – have a play and see
what you come up with.

02

SPLIT THE SLIDERS
You can get more of a
gradual blend between the
clouds and the layer beneath
by splitting up each of the
Shadows and Highlights
Blend If sliders. Hold Alt and
drag the left or right half of
a slider to split it up. Here
we want to lose the darker
blue sky while keeping the
highlights, so we split the
Shadows slider.

03

MASK TO FINISH
Once you’ve got the
hang of the technique,
you can add more clouds
elsewhere in the image if
you like. Once done, you can
inish of by adding a Layer
Mask and painting black to
hide any unwanted parts.
Round things of with a tonal
efect on top of everything,
like the ‘Soft Warming’ Color
Lookup layer here.
