Dibyendu Debnath is a banker by
profession. He is fond of natural
beauty and photography is his
passion and hobby. Dibyendu shot
this picture somewhere in north
Bengal. He says that the light was dull
when he took the picture. He is not
satisfied with the photo and wants
to know how the picture could be
improved.

Dibyendu, ‘light’ is the most

Original

Camera: Nikon D5200; Lens: 18-55mm kit lens
Aperture: F/22; Shutter speed: 1sec; ISO: 200

important element in any picture.
The strength of the light, its quality,
direction and angle relative to the
subject is what makes or breaks a
picture. If the light was dull when you
shot the photo, the picture is going
to be dull! The only way then is to try
and artificially improve the picture in
an image editing program.

In the edited picture, I got rid of the
distracting bamboo (it appears like

bamboo to me) towards the upper
right and also toned down the upper
right corner. I then increased the
contrast and brightness in the water,
toned down some highlights which
I felt were not helping the picture
and sharpened the image. Now there
is a definite difference between the
original and the edited image, though
not as much as I would have liked.
Once again I will say that Photoshop is
not a magic wand!
