  1. THE CONTROVERSY OF PHOTOBASHING
While photobashing is a recognised legitimate
technique, especially when it comes to creating
quick concept art, there are plenty of critics of the
style, some going as far as to call it cheating. A
lot of this stems down to the classification of the

style as digital painting and the overuse of
photography, essentially creating a photomontage,
as well as the potential copyright pitfalls. Here are
our top tips for creating a good photobash, without
falling foul of online critics:

START WITH A SKETCH
Just as if you were doing a pure digital
painting, come up with a concept and
composition for the base of your artwork.

BE WARY OF COPYRIGHT
Where possible, use your own photography
or stick to legitimate stock sources.

DO PLENTY OF PAINTING
This isn’t a photo collage, it’s a digital painting with
a little photo help. Overpaint your photos, blend
them together and make heavy use of brushes.

USE MINIMAL PHOTOGRAPHY
The idea is to add in details and textures that
you can’t, or would take a long time to, paint.
