hen it comes to laptops,
large displays are nice and
keyboard ergonomics are
splendid, but speed is our very
best friend. So this month, we
set out to answer one simple,
burning question. Who makes
the fastest notebook in town?
With this in mind, we asked
six leading notebook vendors
to send us the meanest, most

powerful, most ass-kicking note-
books they make. In response,
we received an amazing assort-
ment of stupid-big machines.
More than 50 pounds of magne-
sium, plastic, silicon, and LCD, in
fact. From super-widescreens to
3D displays, P4 Extremes to an
Athlon 64, ATI to nVidia graphics,
one startling fact became read-
ily apparent: Today’s high-end

notebooks are edging closer and
closer to desktop power levels.
Every year, mobile computing
makes gigantic leaps in size,
power, and design.
Also apparent: Dell’s XPS
laptop is the fastest of the fast,
the strongest of the strong, the
crème de la crème. But more on
that later. Let’s start rounding up
these laptops!
