love the subject as it is so familiar
to me as this is the history of the
area, when wood cutting and
milling were the lifeblood of the early
settlers. Also I love the atmosphere
of the hazy light of winter in the
forest; it is amazing and contrasts
with the freshly cut Red gum logs.
Another reason for choosing this
subject were the patterns of light and
dark, the play of warms and cools
interacting, and how there is a good
lead in and out of the subject through
the light on the tracks that makes a
circular motion, and the logs and tractor
help lead your eye to the dark areas
of the Mill then out to the left of the
subject and into the hazy cool trees.


STEP ONE
I allow the under-painting to dry and
roughly sketch with willow charcoal
the main subject with little detail. Now
I start to slow down and do a lot of
measuring, stepping back squinting
and making sure my perspective is
correct. This is vital at this stage of the
