popular. She was very gracious
with her time and knowledge, and
I was about 11 and decided then
that I was going to be an artist.
After leaving school art took a back
seat for many years, as working in
hospitality in Melbourne and country
Victoria in the ‘70s and marriage
and moving to the Goulburn Valley
of Victoria Kyabram meant long and


odd hours. But even though I wasn’t
practicing art I was still engaged in
reading, going to galleries and joining
art groups. I was inspired by the Old
Masters and Australian Impressionists
like Arthur Stretton and Tom Roberts.
I followed the Archibald Prize, William
Dobell, Margaret Olle, The Boyd family
and many more. In latter years the
artists I admire and aspire to include
the late Sir William Dargy whom I had
