Pastel pencils are the perfect medium for creating realistic

portraits of animals, says artist Colin Bradley.

Animals in pastel pencil

U

nlike hard and soft
pastel sticks, pastel
pencils are a lot easier
to use from the start,
asserts Colin Bradley. “Because
they are in pencil form, they feel
familiar as we remember using
colouring pencils as a child! The
difference, however, is in the
medium. You get all the benefits
of using pastel, but the control
of using a pencil. This allows you
to create stunning pictures with
incredible details.“

Colin Bradley became a professional artist in 1982 and opened his
gallery in Broadstairs the same year. When he was asked to paint a
friend‘s dog he found pastel pencils were ideal for producing the
realism he sought. Colin is now considered the leading exponent
of the pastel pencil medium. He has nearly 2 million views on
YouTube and continues to teach online via his website.
