(^9) Palette knife
To create thick layers of paint
with an impasto texture, a
palette knife is ideal. It‘s also
a useful tool for scraping and
moving paint around on your
canvas to correct mistakes or
add different effects.
(^10) Brush cleaner
Use turpentine,
odourless mineral
spirits or a cleaner/
brush restorer after
each session.

others slow it down (useful when
painting layers). Just dip your
brush into your medium when
mixing your paints.
(^7) Newspaper or rags
Get into the habit of cleaning
your brush when you switch
colours to keep colours fresh.
Use a piece of newspaper or a
rag to quickly squeeze the paint
out of the bristles. Some artists
like to dip their brush into a
cleaning solution, too.
(^8) Charcoal pencil
It helps to sketch a simple outline
of what you’ll be painting using
a soft, broad-tipped pencil such
as a charcoal pencil. It doesn’t
have to be perfect. As oil paint
is opaque, you’ll see the lines
through the paint until you apply
it more thickly. Some
artists prefer to
sketch directly in
paint.
