More mid tone is brought back into the painting
here with brown-pink which ties the boat, quay
and horizon together with differing amounts of
paint applied to each.

The painting has now become a series of
surfaces, not hard masses, of sky, harbour, boat,
etc. All elements now relate to each other more
and so, by dragging the colours from one part of
the composition to another, it has created a unity
within the painting and a depth and energy onto
which I can work further.

I scrape much of the alkyd paint used in the first
hour off the palette and now work with a mix of
alkyd and oil paint.

It‘s important that the
elements of a painting
relate to each other
to create depth
and energy.

Oils with a palette knife

Up to this point I have been getting to know
the subject through developing an oil study by
drawing with paint. However, it is at this stage
that I begin pushing the blade of the palette knife
through the paint in a lively and energetic way.
The sky and foreground become almost blurred
into an atmospheric mass.
