A novice at oil painting, 16-year-old Isabella
says she hasn‘t developed any particular style
or technique yet. This portrait is Isabella‘s
fourth piece, and was part of a GCSE
coursework based around a theme of ‘Pets‘.
At 14, Isabella was one of the winners of the
age category 12–15 Black Swan Young Open
Competition 2014, in Frome in Somerset, for her ball point
drawing of an orangutan.

I sketched the features and shape of the dog,
drawing the background around it to fit
.
I added some detail to the background and blocked
in the darkest colour of the dog‘s fur first
,
avoiding any parts which would be white hair.
Using oil paint, I blocked in the background before
I began applying details or painting in the dog.
I finished the piece by painting the grey hairs over
the black fur, and then the white fur over the grey,
as well as smoothing background smudges.
