Portraits

A

good portrait photo is often necessary in business. Whether
it’s on your website, on your business cardor on social-
media sites such as LinkedIn or Xing, it should be taken by a
professional photographer and renewed every couple of years,
says image consultantLeah Morrigan. “A bad photograph,
seen all too often, looks sloppyand amateurish,” Morrigan
writes in The Toronto Star.
Photographer Mark Jackson recommends keeping your look as natural as possible. Don’t put on too
much make-up or wear evening clothes. Avoid props. “If a prop has meaning, it works,” Jackson says.
“Otherwise it can appear contrived, like lawyersholding books.”

W

ho would have thought that
a show about a group of
young nerds would become
the most popular sitcom on
US television? The Big BangTheory,
about four scientists at Caltech in Pasade-
na, California, is now in its seventh sea-
son. The fictional Dr Sheldon Cooper,
played with great charm by Jim Parsons,
even has his own Wikipedia article — and
a real asteroid named after him.

Trend
Oh, boy

“S

ecretarial work” has long
been synonymous with
“women’s work”. That may
be changing, however. More
and more young men in
Britain see being a corporatepersonal assistant (PA) as the
first step to having a career in business.
Two factors are responsible for the trend, according to The
Observer. One is record-high unemployment among universi-
ty graduates. The other is the fact that corporate PAs can earn
as much as £75,000 (about €90,000) a year.
“In the past, men felt the salaries weren’t high enough and
there was a stigma attached to administrative, typing-based
roles,” says consultantDavid Morel. “Guysare seeing that they
can get to a stagewhere they are providing a lot of business
support to their boss, and that is reflected in their salary.”
