SKILL UP!
Be innovative when you learn. Buy a bright
notebook and some coloured pens. Every
day, write down one word from this guide in
the middle of an empty page. Brainstorm
things that are connected — in any way at
all — with that word. Use your coloured
pens and write the expressions upside-
down, back-to-front and even from top to
bottom. Be creative and have fun with them.
On the next page, write crazy sentences.
Innovation is not an option — it’s a necessity. “Innovate or die” is how Bill
Gates describes it. In this Skill Up!, we present the language you need to
talk about innovation today.
Bill Gates is one of the many entrepreneurs who started their businesses in
a garage. In Picture This! (pp. 4–5), our illustration shows you how one such
start-upcould look. We also present adjectives you can use to describe
innovative productsthat may have started life in a garage. Our Word Bank
(pp. 6–7) takes a closer look at the different kinds of innovation— and at
the different stages of the innovation process. Turn to our In Focus section
(pp. 10–11) to find out how companies can turn failure into a success.
Inventions are an essential part of the innovation process, which is why the
“invent” familyis the focus of Close Relations (pp. 14–15). This time, in
Essential Idioms (pp. 12–13), we show you how to use idioms to describe
how innovative ideas become reality. Just think outside the box!
In False Friends (pp. 8–9), you’ll find out that being “virtuous” doesn’t have
anything to do with innovation. And finally, in Small Talk (pp. 16–17), we
look atinnovative workplaces and ideas. We hope you’ll find plenty of ideas
for your work — and for your language learning— in this guide.
