International Galleries

THAT ART FAIR has grown to include a number of international

galleries. Here, we profile a selection of these galleries and ask the

directors to weigh in on some pertinent topics

Joachim Melchers is a curator, gallerist and publisher based in Germany. After co-

founding ARTCO in 2003 (with Jutta Melchers) as an art agency, the pair turned

the organisation into an art gallery in 2005. ARTCO has taken part in international

art fairs such as 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London, START and FNB

JoburgArtFair.

JOACHIM MELCHERS - ARTCO, Germany

Hildebrando de Melo and Maria do Céu Cabita are the Executive Directors of Lab

Art&Co, Angola, founded in September 2014. De Melo (born in Huambo) and

trained in Portugal. In a career spanning twenty years, he has exhibited work and

taken part in seminars across the globe. Lab Art& Co was founded not only as a

gallery but also as an art consultancy and platform for the international promotion

of Angolan contemporary art. Do Céu Cabita has used her training in Finance to

assist in the development of sustainable career strategies for emerging artists.

Daudi Karungi is a Ugandan artist, gallerist, curator and art consultant. After

graduating from the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts at

Makerere University, Karungi went on to become a founding member of the

Kampala Arts Trust, the co-founder of START – the first journal of arts and

culture in Uganda – and the founder of Afriart Gallery in Kampala. In the following

interview, Karungi expands on sustainable exchanges between artists and galleries,

as well as South Africa’s part in the continental art market.

Born in South Africa, Kurt Blanckenberg is the current director of The Mojo

Gallery in Dubai. He is also a founder-partner of The Mojo Group and works as the

Managing Partner & Executive Creative Director in their creative communications

department. He was previously the Creative Director at BBDO and

Saatchi & Saatchi.
