What’s extraannoyingaboutthis changeis thatwhilebetter
mediamanagementtoolsexistedfor the PC, this one was
designedto specificallyworkwiththe Xbox 360 – somethingit
did ratherwell.
OneextrapointaboutMediaCenterthatyou needto be
aware of is thatshouldyou havea systemwithit on and
convertthatto Windows10, thenMicrosoftwill kindlydelete
it for you from the resultingsystem.But onestepbetterthan
that,shouldyou decideyou wantto regress backto Windows
7 in the 30 daysthatyou’re allowed,Windows7 will come
backbut MediaCenterdefinitelywon’t.
Thosethinkingthattheycan finda versionof this software
thatwill installon Windows10 will be disappointed,as it
appearsMicrosofthas seenthatpossibilitycomingandit will
not install.
Thosefew peoplewholike MediaCenterneedto acceptthat
they’llbe stickingwitha versionof Windowspriorto version10.
8.DVDPlayback
Microsoftaddedthe abilityto playDVDmediaa longtimeago,
but for whateverreason(licencecosts?),it decidedto remove
it from Windows10. Andas if to addinsultto injury, it pushed
thatfunctionalityintoan officialappthatcostsyou £11.59to
return DVDplayingto the system.I’m not sure whyanyone
wouldpay this,giventhatyou can installprogramslike VLC
thatdo it for free.
Unlikesomeof the otherthingsmentionedhere, this isn’t
a deal-breaker;it’s just anotherjob you’llneedto do to your
upgradedsystemto makeit workas wellas the previousone.9.RegressiveApps
Manyof you grew up withWindows,so you generallyexpect
eachnewreleaseto be betterandall the appsthatcomewith
it to be superioror at leastidenticalfeature-wiseto the ones
thatcamebefore. However, withWindows10, thatnotionseems
to havebeenstoodon its headto a degree, becausesomeof the
criticalappsthatcomewithWindows10 aren’t actuallyas goodas
the previousversionsor, evenmore disturbingly, the onesthatare
currentlyon WindowsPhone.
The one thathas got peoplemostperturbedis OneDrive,
where somereally powerfuloptionsthatWindows8 introduced
havebeenunceremoniouslyjunked.
UnderWindows8, it waspossibleto selectivelysyncfilesin a
waythatall machinesthatshared the sameMicrosoftaccounts
couldsee all the files,but you couldcontrol exactlywhatfiles
livedon multiplemachines.In this way, you didn’t overloada
machinewithlimitedstorage(likethe originalSurface),yet you
couldedit somefileson one drivethatwouldbe syncedbackto
yourdesktopmachine.
OneDrivein Windows10 doesn’t worklike that.It’s regressed
to a formerfunctionality, where you syncspecificfilesand folders
withoutthe ‘placemaker’optionof seeingeverythingstored on
the cloudaccount.
