S

wann is a well-known
purveyorof security-
related tech, and
we’ve covered its
camerasin Micro Mart before.
But with its new SwannOne
range, it's dived headfirstinto
the Internet of Things,where
an ensembleof connected
devicescan be used to secure
your home.
These devicescome
individuallyor as a package
like the Smart Home Control
Kit that Swannsent me to
review here.
The critical component
at the heart of the system
is the SwannOneSmart
Hub. Think of this as a
router for the other devices,
which interfaceswith your
broadbandrouter and allows
you to remotelycontrol all
aspectsof your setup. This

box actuallydoublesas a
phone chargingstation– one
of the nice design aspectsof
this equipment.

With the Smart Hub you
also get two KeyFobs,a
motionsensor, two Window/
Door sensors,an indoor
SoundView camera,a smart
power plug and all the
cables and accessoriesto
make it all function.You
even get some window
stickersto alert local burglars
that you’vesomething
worth stealing.

Settingup is just a matter
of poweringup the hub
and then using the MAC
address from the sticker

on the rear to register on
the SwannOnewebsite.
Once you’veestablished
that association,you can
pair the other components
to the Smart Hub and then
control them using any iOS or
Android device using a simple
application.
I did have a little trouble
settingup the KeyFobs,for
whateverreason, but in most

respects,it is straightforward
to configure and doesn’t
require any specialtools or
skills to install. Well, assuming
that you’re familiarwith
computers,wi-fi, pairing
devicesand generally
masteringtechnology.
And that’s the rub really,
becausethis isn’t something
that everyonewould find a
breeze to deploy, and some
of the terminologyand
methodologymight flummox
the averageiPad user.
Obviously, the Smart Home
Control kit is meant to be
the start of your investment,
and Swannmakes a wider
range of devicesyou can add
once you have the Smart
Hub running.These include
outdoorcamerasand an
external siren, and the system
is also compatiblewith other
IoT equipment,like Kwikset
