as theyliked‘bigtin’,whichis an excuseto giveIBM

hugeamountsof moneyfor remarkablyduff AS400

performance.

At thetime,whatwereallyneededwasa Novell

Netware PC network,andI lobbiedfor thisandeven

suggestedthatI’d helpIT set it up.

Thosein chargeof thatdepartmentresentedtheideathat

theirveryexpensiveIBMmini-computermightbe undermined,and

actuallywere entirely obsessedwiththecompletecontrol thata

centralisedsystemoffered them.

Monthswentby, andmyrelationshipwiththeIT department

plummeted,as theyfumbledaroundandtriedto entirely ignore the

needsof thedepartmentsaroundthem.

Eventuallytheyannounced,likeit wastheiridea,thatthere

wouldbe a PC networkandeventuallypublisheda specification

for whattheyintended.In thisdocumentwastheantithesisof

mythinking;a LANManager(OS/2)server, combinedwithApricot

386SXdisklessworkstationsoverthinEthernet!

Predictably, I wrotea longmemoentirely tearingthisplana new

one,andpointingoutthenumerousandmostlyobviouspoints
