A LIFE OF ART


at the University. I realised I wasn’t cut out to be an
architect. In the same year my painting of City Road,
done from the top of the school of Architecture, was
hung in the Wynne exhibition. I was 19 at the time.
During my teens and early twenties I painted in
both watercolour and oils, using watercolour for
sketches and oils for more i nished work. I exhibited
in local exhibitions and did a number of commissions
including a portrait for the then Chief Justice Sir
Gari eld Barwick.
In 1966-67 I taught art at Kambala School in
Sydney and then went overseas for what was to be
three-and-a-half years teaching art and studying in
Italy and briel y in Austria. I received a commission
