Creative Artist - Issue 10_

(ff) #1

Domenico Palombo is an Italian oil painter and
master art restorer whose work is focused on
Figurative Abstract Expressionism. Trained in the
classical European style of painting, Domenico has
found great inspiration in the mystical beauty of the
Australian landscape. This exhibition at Pepper Street
Arts Centre expressed Domenico’s artistic journey
from the discipline and formality of his classical
European background to the freedom of Abstract
Expressionism.
Pepper Street Arts Centre is a lively arts
environment supporting creative endeavour and
excellence, promoting arts appreciation and
education, and providing for social engagement
across the artistic and wider community.

This exhibition is one of renewal, of reinvigoration,
cultural memory and relection.
Go Figure! is an exhibition of thirty-one artists
drawn from works within Manly Art Gallery &
Museum’s collection.Works range from a 1900
etching by Renoir and George Lambert’s The death
of Adonis painting (1902), up to contemporary
photographs and ceramics. Many of the artworks
have not been viewed for some years and represent
traditions of art practice, while other works have
been more recently acquired and demonstrate new
and creative ways of representing the igure.
The human form has been represented through
art history for thousands of years and artists
continue to represent the igure both ‘outwardly’
and from ‘within’. Go Figure! draws on an
extensive range of media, including drawing,
painting, printmaking, ceramics and photography.
This exhibition examines the body, or ‘igure’, as a
source of inspiration, of symbolism, curiosity and
beauty; a representation of form that speaks of
time, place and culture.
Go Figure! relects a diversity of artists’ practice,
presents some of the fascinating people and
personalities of our local area and provides an
insight into their lives and cultural contexts through
the decades. The works examine ideas of gender,
human relationships, cultural heroes and the
physicality of the human form.
A broad range of both male and female artists
are represented here and highlight the strength of
these ground breaking Australian artists locally and
nationally: Arthur Streeton, George Lambert, Thea

Proctor, Nora Heysen, Brian Dunlop, Max Dupain,
Olive Cotton, Paula Talbert, Bill Leak, Garry Shead
and Guan Wei to name a few.
It could be said that these ceramic sculptures
and igurative images narrate cultural stories
and encourage memories, while inviting new
perspectives from which to appreciate these
artworks. This exhibition provides an opportunity to
contemplate connections and view these works in a
refreshing new light. Go Figure!
