end-of-days intervention in the Montreal art-

ist’s cinematic video work, part of the touring

survey exhibition “The Political Nightfall.”

instability of pictorial space and the act of

painting as an architectural exploration of

object and form are touchstones for a suite

of recent abstract paintings by the Montreal

DENNIS DAY In “Referencing Materials,”

Day starts with photos of everyday objects—

flowers, stemware, home appliances, a candle

flame—which he then cuts out and restages

as a series of still-life dioramas that examine

the fine line between material and metaphor.
