Daretodream

The privates on this issue cover left me wanting. We run
a few each month and try to vary them up. Sometimes
real bargains jump out. At other times, oddities like the
circa 1900 built Jones fishing boat present themselves.
Vessels like this don’t come up for sale often, most
are unfortunately beyond repair sitting on the hard
somewhere or worse, already burnt or disposed of. This
Jones heralds from Williamstown, VIC. She features
a Jarrah keel, hardwood ribs and New Zealand Kauri
planking but what stood out was the air-cooled Lister twin
cylinder diesel. For anyone that hasn’t had the pleasure of
hearing, and smelling, an old air-cooled diesel like it, you
should. It is an experience like no other and always makes
my hair stand on end. They are simple to maintain but
temperamental, which to me adds to the appeal. Putting
about on the bay and lakes while dealing with little
‘character flaws’ is heaven to me.
To its right sits another oddity but this one not becasue
of its age or make up. It is a tinnie, well a massive tinnie
best described as a launch, that carries with it modern
technology and top notch powerplants. Custom built in WA,
it has a top-notch build sheet from high end Raymarine
electronics to a 48nm radar and I kid you not, around
780 litres of fridge/freezer capacity. Talk about priorities.
Digging deeper while dreaming of seeing my friends and
I aboard, I came across it’s powerplant details. Running
twin Q5.9 Cummins diesels sealed the dream-deal for me.
The 5.9’s are revered for their reliability and effi ciency and
are common both on-land and in the marine environment
so parts supply is no issue. Is it a bargain? That’s hard to
say as custom boats are hard to value but no doubt the
replacement cost and importantly, wait period to get a
vessel of its calibre, shouldn’t be taken lightly. Had I the
space (and the finances if I’m honest) a flight to WA would
be on the cards.

AMERICAN BEAUTY
It only feels like yesterday that we were lambasted for
featuring too many American boats in these pages but
in reality, I haven’t heard such in over a year while I
stand by my counter-argument that the boats we feature
stand on their own merits. This issue we feature new-
to-market Sportsman with their Island Reef 19 and it’s a
cracker. Small enough to tow easily and to only require
a small outboard it’s aff ordable but it rides well and is
exceptionally well built, says reviewer Kevin Smith. I’m
hoping to see for myself soon but by the sounds of the
review and the goals of the distributor, we will all be
seeing Sportsman on the waters around us soon.

If you want to talk to us, we are always listening. The
