located approximately one mile
south of Little Eye where the
skipper had attempted to anchor
his vessel. The man was taken
ashore where he was checked
over by paramedics and
declared well enough to go
home. His boat, which was
described as being in a good
condition and well prepared for
the voyage, was towed to West
Kirby Sailing Club moorings.
SCOTLAND
USE DESIGNATED
ANCHORAGES
Argyll and Bute Council is asking
for reports of yachts that anchor
outside the four designated
anchorages in Loch Creran.
The area is a Special Area of
Conservation and a Marine
Protected Area.
A spokesperson for the council
told PBO: ‘We would ask that
mariners only use these
designated anchorages to
protect the sensitive habitats.
‘We will continue to monitor the
situation. Reports of vessels
anchoring outside the designated
places can be made to us via the
contact form on our website at
http://www.argyll-bute.gov.uk’.
The designated anchorages
are set out in the Clyde Cruising
Club sailing directions and
Admiralty chart 2379.

LANTERN REINSTATED
ON WOODEN LIGHTSHIP
After 40 years the Royal
Northumberland Yacht Club
(RNYC) has reinstalled a lantern
aboard their historic lightvessel,
LV 50, in South Harbour, Blyth,
Northumberland.
The original 2-ton wrought iron
lantern was discarded because
of its poor condition. Two club
members built the wooden and
fi breglass replica, which has just
been fi tted.
Built on the Thames for the
notorious Seven Stones Reef off
the Isles of Scilly, LV 50 was
commissioned in September
1879, and was the most modern
wooden lightvessel in the Trinity
House fl eet. Her 8ft revolving,
fl ashing lantern and her
three-reed compressed air
foghorn were innovations.
She saw service on numerous
sandbanks and reefs off south
and east England where she
provided warning to mariners
and a navigational fi x in the era
before GPS. In 1952, she was
decommissioned and sold to
wreckers in Harwich before
being bought by the RNYC. She
was towed to Blyth and
anchored in South Harbour
where, for the past 75 years, she
has been the house yacht Tyne.
Over the past three years The
Friends of LV50 have opened her
regularly to the public. Listed on
the National Historic Ships
Register, she’s one of only three
fl oating wooden lightships left in
the UK.

PRESERVING BROADS
MILL HERITAGE
Heritage sites in and around one
of the largest inland waterways
in the UK – The Broads – will
now be preserved.
The £4 million Water, Mills and
Marshes project has been given
the go ahead following the
confi rmation of funding from the
Heritage Lottery Fund.
The grant of £2.5 million is in
addition to £1.5 million from
other sources. The money will
be used to preserve the heritage,
environment and archaeological
assets within the Broads.
It will also provide
opportunities for the public to
contribute in a practical way
towards its upkeep. – by helping
to restore historic mills or
surveying wildlife habitats.

PAYING MORE FOR
WATERWAYS BOATING
Boaters will now have to pay
more to use their vessels on the
rivers Thames, Anglian and
Upper Medway.
The Environment Agency is
increasing boat registration
charges after a two year freeze.
It says the extra money is
essential to help deliver
navigation services.
Any powered boat kept, used
or let for hire will face increased
registration charges of 5.7% on
the Thames, 7.5% on the Anglian
and 10% on the Upper Medway.
Charges for all unpowered
boats (not houseboats) and
those registered with British
Rowing or British Canoeing, will
increase by 7.7%.
The increases will apply from
1 January on the Thames, and
1 April for the other waterways.
