extra assistance with their designs
with their quilts. The service adds
an additional expense to each
project. We offer a design service
for customers who need some extra
help with their design.
Vivika: You helped move my
original design from “good” to
“great” with that service —it was well
worth it! Now I’m ready to work on
my next piece, and I’m wondering if
we could have a sneak peek at your
future plans.
Andi: We’re looking at many
options for the future, including
adding half-square triangles to
the mix to allow more angles and
curves in quilts, alphabet patterns,
automatic monochromatic coloring
(think Andy Warhol), and even
fabric mosaics. So many plans!
Vivika: Personalization is a real
trend in the design world. How has
YouPatch changed the way pixelated
quilts are designed?
Andi: Before YouPatch, it could take
10 or more hours to make the pixel
quilt design. When you change a
process from hours to less than a
minute, it really does change the
game. Previously, people had to
take a course or pay to have their
quilts designed. We are very proud
of our patterns which simpoify
construction, include accurate
shopping lists, and complete
cutting instructions.
This website is a game-changer
for anyone who wants to
design (or commission) a
pixelated quilt. The process is
easy and accessible even for
beginners. Best of all, creativity
and personalization are part
of the process: you decide the
size, number of colors, level of
diffi culty, and amount of detail
you want, and the website does
the math.
We can’t wait to see where this
technology leads artists in the
future!
the making
of “ed note”
- Within minutes of designing the
quilt on the website, YouPatch
sent me a detailed PDF of
the design, including yardage
needed for each color of Kona®
cotton, detailed cutting charts,
and piecing instructions for the
entire quilt.
NOTE: Andi’s design service
added an additional day and
minimal expense to the project.
- Th e cutting and piecing
diagrams were excellent and
contained no errors.
- I cut the 1,281 individual pieces
fi rst and organized them in
plastic bags by color and size.
- Piecing the 64" x 64" quilt took
approximately 40 hours.
- Professional longarm quilting
was done by Angela Walters.
