Snapper spawn early and more often in warm years,
afterwards entering estuaries and harbours to feed in
good numbers. Kingfish also take advantage of warm
water to migrate well south and to move into harbours
and estuaries chasing bait fish and kahawai. Because their
metabolisms speed up as the water warms, fish tend to
feed more often and for longer periods: bite times last
longer and many species become easier to catch.
Sharks move inshore in summer too. Bronze whalers
and school sharks drop their pups in sheltered bays and
deep holes inside harbours. They are very common during
the summer months, starting from November. Bronze
whalers will travel far up estuaries and brackish creeks, as
well as patrolling beaches.
Snapper and kahawai are favourite prey items, but
bronze whalers also eat much larger fish such as kingfish
and stingrays. At some locations they can be a real
nuisance to fishers and divers, taking fish from anglers’
lines and harassing spear-fishers.
Bronze whalers are increasing in numbers in response
to reduced inshore commercial longline and net fishing.LEFT Seabirds
