This particular example
also has a large bimini
and sprayhood; recently
renewed. Catalina has
continued with its stern
rail seats which are useful
for extending the social
space in the cockpit. Cockpit
locker space is shared with
a covered hatch for the aft
cabin, which gives privacy
with ventilation.
The cockpit is uncluttered,
with the steering binnacle
behind a folding table. The
binnacle instruments are


Raymarine and include
autopilot, wind indicator and
analogue engine gauges for
the 40hpYanmar shaftdrive.
Behind the helm, a hinged
bulkhead leads to an
elevated sugar scoop stern
and its functional fold-out
ladder. Nice touches here
are the two wet-gear lockers
and hot/cold shower plus a
gas barbecue.
Cockpit sail controls
comprise Harken sheet
winches for the genoa on
the gunwales beside the
binnacle plus two winches

ABOVE A clear hoody maximises vision forward. LEFT A tidy
foredeck with twin rollers and electric windlass ensure safe
anchoring for the Catalina. BELOW A functional and roomy
cockpit includes stern quarters seating and well-moulded
coaming all round.

self-tailing for easy use and
the coachroof halyards are
controlled by two banks
of jammers; including the
mainsheet track which is
also on the coachroof, so
nicely clear of the guests.
Handy features on this
particular model include

rope bags and an opening
window in the sprayhood
for quick access to the main
track.
This 387 has a simple but
sturdy rig comprising roller
furler headsail and slab
reefed mainsail with lazy
jacks; so ideal for cruising
