Flying into 2018

F

irstly, a very happy new year to all
our readers! As we head into what
I am sure will be another fantastic
year of racing, we’ve taken a moment
to celebrate the very best kit, boats,
events and sailors from the last 12 months with
the announcement of our category winners in
the Y&Y Awards. anks to our many thousands
of readers who voted! I do hope you will join us
to show your support when we present all our
winners on 11 January at the London Boat Show.
e new year is also naturally a good time to look
ahead. I think there’s little doubt le that foiling is
set to play a big part in sailing’s future. Just take a
look at our cover stories this month! As pictured, we
put the rst production foiler – the Figaro Beneteau
3 - on test. We may have had light winds on the test
day, but there’s no doubt that this well-considered
design will pave the way for some exciting
developments in the not-very-distant future.
Foiling has already gripped the dinghy world,
of course, and we’ve also learnt this month
about a new portfolio of Learn to Foil courses
being introduced by the RYA (page 46).
Even Ben Ainslie is excited about the possibility
of foiling boats becoming mainstream; see page 28
to nd out what he really thinks of the proposed

foiling 75 er for the next America’s Cup. Note the
AC75 concept is not set in stone yet – let’s face it,
nothing in the Cup ever really is. But it will be a
real surprise if the initial radical design doesn’t
alter in some way down the line. A er all, foiling
still presents a very steep learning curve – both in
design and sailing terms. It will be just as crucial for
the America’s Cup teams to be ready to adapt as it
will be for the rest of the sport getting to grips with
foiling and all that it entails - particualrly if we are to
really capitalise on what it could bring to our sport.
Whether you are planning to get airborne
anytime soon or are sticking to something more
conventional for now, I wish you happy sailing
and fair winds in 2018. And, as Bob Fisher learns
from Peter Burling in
his column this month,
sailing is, a er all, sailing.
