Smallest yacht takes Transat

Eric de Turckheim’s Teasing Machine has won the 2017 RORC

Transatlantic Race on handicap, with Lude Invegall’s CQS taking

line honours after an eventful race for the latter, su ering dramatic

knock-downs and breakages.

De Turckheim’s French Nivelt-Muratet 54 beat the record 23

yacht fleet on corrected time under IRC and in so doing has

become the smallest yacht to win the Transatlantic Trophy, which

has been previously won exclusively by yachts in the Maxi Class.

“To win the RORC Transatlantic Race is just fantastic,” said de

Turckheim. “It is not just a personal achievement to win my first

ever transatlantic race because it has been such a massive team

e ort. Teasing Machine was only taking part in its second o shore

race and to build a team to that performance level within four

months has required a huge commitment from everyone.”

Two medals for GBR in China

The British Youth Sailing Team has took home

medals in two of the eight fleets at the World

Sailing Youth World Championships in China.

Daisy Coleridge who was the British

representative in the girl’s Laser Radial fleet

picked up a bronze medal in the super

competitive fleet. Britain has not won a medal in

that class since Alison Young (British Olympian

in 2012 and 2016) won it in 2005.

Meanwhile, Emma Wilson followed up her

Youth Worlds win last year in the girl’s RS:X

windsurfer with another gold this year. Given her

impressive victory in 2016, Wilson later admitted

she would have been disappointed with

anything other than gold. “I’m so happy and

relieved!” said the 18-year-old. “It was so close

for the whole week – I was second for the whole

week and then finally on the last reach I pulled

up. It was amazing.”

In the Nations Trophy, awarded to the best

performing team, Italy came out on top with

strong performances. The British team were

fourth of 60 nations, with only the Israelis and

the Americans joining Italy ahead of Britain.
