Vital research by VOR
Millions of tiny particles
of plastic have been
detected in European
waters by Team Turn
the Tide on Plastic in
the Volvo Ocean Race.
The scientifi c
research, using data
collected by the team,
identifi ed over 3 million
micro plastic particles
per square kilometre of
ocean by using a
new state-of-the-art
instrument on board
their Volvo Ocean 65.
These initial results
were gathered during
the Prologue stage and

Leg 1 of the Race,
between Lisbon and
Alicante. But the team
will be continuing the
study throughout the
race. The samples
collected during Leg 2
are currently being
analysed and results
will be revealed soon.
“Our initial fi ndings
suggest the levels of
micro plastic in the
ocean are signifi cantly
higher than we fi rst
expected,” said Tanhua,
an ocean researcher
from Germany helping
with the study.

Golden Globe to go?
The Golden Globe Race, a race designed to refl ect
the original Golden Globe in the 1960s may need to
think of a new starting point after the Federation
Francaise de Voile (FFV) declared the race did not
fi t with some of their safety principals.
As we go to press the two sides are sitting down
for talks and will be hoping to fi nd a resolution.
Originally the event was scheduled to start in
Falmouth but it was moved to France following a
reassessment by the host port and race organisers.
The FFV are, in broad terms, the French
equivalent of the RYA, and have been taking a
relatively hard line on safety. Recently the federation
introduced mandatory wearing of helmets for any
foiling class regatta in France. Taking exception to a
fl eet of boats recreating a 1960s globe-girdling race,
which saw only one fi nisher of the nine o– cial
entrants seems a continuation of this focus. JEREMIE LECAUDEY; BENOIT STICHELBAUT; C/O CLIPPER RACE; PPL

Frenchman, Yves le Blevec, has been rescued
after he capsized his 31m Nigel Irens designed
Actual Ultime (formerly Sodebo), o Cape
Horn in the early hours of the morning on
Thursday 14 December.
Le Blevec was in the middle of an attempt to
break the solo non-stop westabout round the
world record. The incident o the tip of South
America came when one of the trimaran’s port
crossbeams broke in west-northwest wind of 30
knots with 5 to 6 metre waves. Luckily, le Blevec
was able to get safely inside the boat and was
then rescued by the Chilean Coast Guard.
The record he sought to break was set in
2004 by Jean-Luc Van Den Heede who
completed the route in 122 days, 14 hours.
