Happy to pass on lessons from personal experience

Having just finished my January edition lazing on
the Thames in Oxford, I feel I may be able to assist
with a couple of the back cabin topics from personal
experience.
Firstly, Viv Chewins, or anyone else’s, Yanmar
fuel leak. This could be the fuel leak off pipe where
it seals to the injector, it appears to be a metal to
metal joint, however there is in fact an O ring on the
injector that seals the leak off pipe banjo, and over

time these can start to leak. Tightening will not help,
the rubber O rings need to be replaced (and the
sealing washers below the banjo).
Secondly, belt sizes, I’m not an expert, but I do
know it can be a minefield! Dave Mull gives his
belt size as 1157Lp. He states his new belt is 1157,
however he does not mention the Lp. As far as I
am aware the suffix to the length, Lp, La, Li (and
others) are crucial to obtain the correct belt, as

they denote where the belt is measured (internal,
external, average). Therefore one can have three
different length belts with the same numeric length
printed on them, the only difference being the Lp,
La, Li etc.
Must go, there’s lots of mince pies warming on
the stove just asking to be eaten....

The picture shows nb Sammy Rose which is based at
Ashwood Marina on the Staffs and Worcester Canal.
She was built by Les Allan in 1986 and refitted by
Perrydale Narrowboats in 2016.
The design is a traditional style with a boatman’s

cabin, exposed engine room with Perkins 3 cylinder
46hp engine, but with fully modernised living
accommodation. The steam engine in the background
is a Great Western Manor 4-6-0 no 7820 Dinmore
Manor, on its last day of operation on the Churnet

Valley Railway on loan from the Gloucestershire
Warwickshire Railway. The train and the narrowboat
are heading North, with Consall station of the Churnet
Valley Railway in the background.
